Hi boarders,

Gary Morris is our man in Baja this winter. He has the enviable task of doing nothing but sailing all day. In the summers you may have met him as the Gorge Ezzy tech rep. Windance has loaned Gary some of the new 2010 Angulo boards for the winter to test and he has written a detailed review of the Angulo Chango 73GT.

He claims: "riding the swells is truly heavenly….and it’s now quicker to plane".

La Ventana Windsurfing

Read Gary's Angulo Chango Review below this blog post.

Last week 3 of my staff and 2 customers went kiting. They froze but managed anyway and had a good time...

Winter Kiteboarding Hood River

Scott & Brad snow kited New Years day. 5 days later John, Hal and Pete kited the unfrozen ponds near Astoria and then Scott & Brad kited on the river near Viento the next morning before work. That’s hardcore, I love it.

Be sure to get the last of the 2009 clearouts before someone else beats you to it;

Testing the 2010 Chango GT 73 in Baja. December 24, 2009

After a slow start to the season here in La Ventana Baja, we've had 12 days straight of great wind, and I've finally had several days on the new 2010 Angulo Chango GT 73 liter board. I've been riding the Changos since 2005 when Josh first joined forces with Windance. For two summers the Changos were the most popular boards in our rental fleet when Nancy and I ran the rental/demo center. I still have my original Chango 75 here in Baja as my back-up board since its 2000 miles back to Hood River in case of an unforeseen equipment disaster during the 6 months were here.

Angulo Chango Board Test

I weigh in at 160 lbs and sailed the board in conditions ranging from 4.0 to 5.0. The water conditions in La Ventana are bump & jump with 4-6' swells on the outside when it's 4.0 and down. For anyone who has sailed an earlier model of the Chango the new board will seem very similar. It has the same "instantly comfortable" ride of past years, which is why it was so popular with rental customers. All it takes is one reach out and back, and the Chango is your best friend…comfortable and controlled on a reach or in a turn.

I did notice some subtle differences with the new board. First, it's quicker to plane, which probably comes from the little extra width and new tail shape. I was concerned that the extra width might make the board less comfortable at speed through the chop, but that wasn't the case at all. The ride is very sweet; just smooth and comfortable. And did I say it likes to turn? The one thing that every Angulo board I've ridden can do well is TURN! Riding the swells on this board is truly heavenly. Short or long turns, it makes no difference, it puts a smile on your face. Ed and Josh have definitely nailed it with the new Chango.

If you are coming to Baja this winter stop by the windsurfing beach at South Park in the La Ventana campground and take a test ride on the new Angulo Chango, Creola, and Ezzy Panthers.

I'm there every windy afternoon; see you on the beach, Gary.

Welcome to the New Year,

I hope you had fun, we sure did. We rung the new year in up at Mt. Hood with a great fireworks show they put on while they kept the lifts open until midnight.

Mt Hood Meadows Fireworks

Then on Jan 1st my neighbor Spike and I took the kids tobogganing (aka sledding). Here’s Roz Slater stunt-jumping her toboggan over a pile of 5 other kids!

Mt Hood Sled Jump

After that Spike and I went down to the White Salmon for some fly fishing, didn’t catch any Steelhead but saw some big old Salmon. It’s just nice to be outside on New Years day.

Mt Hood Fishing

Hope you had a good day as well and a great year.

Note that the Deal of the Day is now the Deal of the Week

We decided to make it go for the week to give you more time for spousal approval, haha :0)

Hey boarders,

It’s New Years and a time to reflect. It’s been a busy year again for me. 2009 was the 1st full year I have owned the shop since I bought it in Feb 2008. We saw great growth in our business thanks to both our new, and our loyal customers. It’s nice to have growth when other shops are not during this economic mess, it means to me we are being rewarded for our efforts in offering great service on great products.

Windance intends to be here for the long run and to ensure our location my wife and I just bought the property that Windance (and Mothers & Lampoei’s) is on from Brian Carlstrom who was the Windance founder. On that note if you want to store an RV/trailer/boat we are renting out spaces in our lot at $50/month, and no you can’t sleep in your RV here, sorry the city wouldn’t allow it.

2009 Windance highlights include:

  • It was a windy year with only 1 week where we got shut out this summer
  • We held 3 big Swap Meets including the big May one where all spaces were filled
  • We hosted “Free beer & BBQ parties” 3 three times also courtesy of our generous suppliers. Don’t miss next years!
  • Windance was featured in both Windsurfing and The Kiteboarder magazines as well as on TV on CGN-7’s "Out There" show. Watch it here.
  • Josh Angulo wins the World Wave champ title on Angulo boards of course!
  • In September we had the Wind Industry dealers meetings right here in Hood River and got tons of wind for testing gear
  • And finally I think our Windance staff Christmas party has to be included since it got so outrageous

Anyhow, I hope you had a good year too and that 2010 brings lots of snow, wind, waves and good times your direction.

It’s Dec. 31st and it’s going to snow 18” today and we are heading to the Mt. Hood Meadows for New Years party!

Happy New Year

Dave Nunn

Hi Boarders,

This week, Ruth Blackburn, one of the original gang of Gorge Girls came in to drop of 3 boxes of vintage windsurfing mags from back in the day. She wants us to pass them on to the CGWA for them use or sell. She also had with her this classic photo of her homemade rolling windsurfer, I had to post it.

Hey boarders,

This week I have been spying around for gossip and here’s what I‘ve found.

2010 Ezzy Panther Sneak Peak

You heard it here 1st. We have the inside line on what’s going on in Maui from our secret agent we have posted there. The Ezzy Panther for 2010 is done and being tested. Don't forget: Only Windance can offer the best deals and packages on all 2010 Ezzy Windsurfing sails!

New Panther & FreeRide 2010 have seen a few refinements. The biggest change is further weight reductions, see below.

  • Technora® fiber lowered the overall and swing weight a lot in ’09 and has been kept for the ‘10’s.
  • New TriLite fabric (white) for 2010 is now used in the center section of the sail and even further reduces swing weight.
  • Now you have 4 color choices for the Panther, including a sexy looking forest green.
  • Other changes are subtle, more details for you later.

Robby Naish is a grandpa. Yup you heard it here 1st, Robby’s daughter from his 1st marriage had a baby. Congrats Grandpa Naish!!

I’m heading to Seattle for the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday and Windance is closed for just the Thursday (1 of only 3 days a year we are closed). Have a great weekend, eat lots and spend time with your family and enjoy yourself.

Hey Boarders,

This weeks blog is all about product. Lot's of stuff to show you, as always.

Windsurfing report

Chinook gave us a sneak preview of the new 2010 top of the line Aluminum boom called the Pro-1 Alloy. Apparently this new bend curve in the front-end is really comfortable during transitions. retail will be $199 but we can always do 10% off for you. It should be available by February.

Roof Racks Report

Don't forget we are your roof rack specialists. All Thule racks and boxes are 10% off , always. Plus we have our own Gorge Rax which attach to Thule Racks and let you stack three boards high!

Thule Snowboard and Ski Roofracks

Kiteboarding Report

Best sellers this fall have been the Slingshot RPM at 25% off and the new Ocean Rodeo Mako King (like Tarzan it swings goes both ways; twin or directional)

Ocean Rodeo Mako King

Snowboarding Report

Rocker boards; are they the goods or a gimmick?. We have tested several and have come to the conclusion that they make riding easier, but you give up some performance. The conventional camber boards give great edge control and pop you out of turns. Reverse Camber ( aka; Rocker boards) are great in the powder because the nose rides so high you rarely nosedive like you used too. In the park Rocker boards keep you from catching edges when sliding rails. A good compromise between the two is a mild rocker board with camber between the bindings. Both the Ride Slack-Country and the Flow Solitude are are good examples of performance Rocker boards that we have tested and like.

Flow Solitude 2010 Snowboard

Mountain Board Report

Mountain boarding is a growing sport these days. Here's local hotshot Simon getting some nice Indy air on his backyard course. Also really popular are the MBS street-boards with the big wheels like this Urban Cruiser for $159.

More reports later as more good products come our way.

Hard core kiters and sailors like Pete, Hal, Larry and John have been out every windy day. The winds have been decent and yesterday it was blowing 20-25 knots westerly from Hood River to the Dalles. Be sure to check out our favorite cold weather mitts, the DaKine Cold Water Mitt.

Maui Report

We have two on site Maui staffers over there riding the big swells. Thomas is our web guru who lives there now and windsurfs a lot with his 9 year old son Chase. And Debbie has been there for almost two months and should be returning to work soon :0) Both are telling me it has been above average on Maui with several big swells coming through. Also tourism is way down so it's pretty cheap to go there.

Baja Report

Gary Morris is giving us great reports from La Ventana in Baja / Mexico which you can see on the Ezzy Blog anytime. You will remember Gary as the guy who ran the Windance rentals here for years and now does all the Ezzy demos both here in the Gorge and in Baja. Just like the sails Gary is a top quality guy.

Hey boarders,

It's snowing up in the mountains and blowing here in Hood River. Makes it hard to decide what to do!

Mt Hood Snow Webcams

Last week John and I got out kiting with two of our customers Pete & Hal. It was great, we were the only four out there and all of us were on Ocean Rodeo 2010 Rises. What a great kite, really. The wind range is huge since it has a lot of low-end power but also can be sheeted way out in gusts and still flies well when de-powered. A lot of kites don't fly well of the front lines and lose their steering but the Rise doesn't. You should try one. We will have these on our site in the next week, but you can get them now if you want.

Call me, I am in the deal making mode!

This weekend is the Hood River Gear Swap at the High School, Saturday Oct 31st from 9-4pm. It's a good chance to trade up your old ski and snowboard gear for new/used stuff. Windance will be there with lots of great new deals up to 40% off.

The Portland Ski Fever & Snowboard Show is Nov 6,7 & 8th and Windance will be there also. See us in booths 246-249.

Here are two great deals on winter sale items we just bought on clear out from DaKine, both are 40% off.

DaKine Bronco glove. It's Gore-Tex, so great for those wet days on the mountain. I wear these myself

DaKine Base Layers (aka; Long underwear). We have Mens, Womens and kids in top and bottoms all on sale while quantities last.

I hope the weather is still warm enough to get in the water where you are. Don't be afraid to get your drysuit out and extend your season. Be safe, ride with a friend.

Thanks,

Hi Boarders,

New Sailing Speed Record !!!

That's the good news, the bad news is that a boat has it again. However a windsurfer was aboard. Former World Cup champion Anders Bringdal was on the the French tri-foiler l'Hydroptère when it hit 51.36 knots ( 59.46mph). The speed record has changed hands many times from boat to windsurfer to kiter and back to boat again. Read the latest here.

iWindsurf Gorge forecasting has been suspended until the spring. Thanks iWindsurf for a great season of forecasting winds here in the Gorge, we look forward to your return. In the meantime Temira is still doing her forecasts. Go to her homepage and see the box on the right for forecasts.

Note that we still have a few Ocean Rodeo 2008 used & demo kites left to go. These have been very popular since they fly so well and the price is really low. Great 1st timers kite from $399 complete.

Also for windsurfers please check the closeout list on the home page for killer deals, like Severne & Goya wavesails for $299, Ezzy Panther '09 demos, any size, $399. Angulo, RRD and Goya demos from $799.

Snowboarders get ready, there is snow on Mt. Hood!. Windance has all it's 2009 snowboarding gear on sale at 25% off as well.

Hey all you Vancouver BigWaveDave sailors, have a great Thanksgiving Weekend and thanks for dropping down here all summer. Good luck with the Olympics!

Thanks,

Dave

How good is the 2010 Angulo Chango GT Waveboard?

Let's re-phrase this question: How good is the Chango in "Real World" Windsurfing and Wave Conditions?

Well, it does not get more real than 20 knots gusty onshore, heavy shorebreak and light winds on the inside.

See for yourself...

Here is Josh Angulo riding a production Chango GT during the Single Elimination Final at the Windsurfing World Cup in Sylt, Germany.

Hi Boarders,

The AWSI show ended last week with lots of wind. It was a total success for all the windsurfing and kiteboarding manufacturers, plus a great chance for the retailers to test lots of great product for next year. Here's a few more pics for you.;

Hoodriver Kite and Windsurf Expo

  • Bottom-Left: Here I am with Jim Drake. He is known as the "Father of windsurfing" and sailed his 1st windsurf board in 1967 !
  • Top-Left: Ben Severne showing off how light his sails really are.
  • Top-Right: The 2010 RRD sailboard line.
  • Middle-Right: 2010 BIC Core and Techno boards and rig.
  • Bottom-Right: Pete Dekay of Windsport mag going over the RRD line.

My Windance staffers all got out and spent hours testing both windsurf and kite products for next year. We were very diligent in making comparisons not just with our brands but others we don't sell like North, Naish, & F-One . The goal was to be able to give you the best advice on what's hot and what's not.

Overall the top 3 most loved products for 2010 that we sell were;

  • Ocean Rodeo 165cm. Mako King kiteboard
  • Severne S-1 windsurf sail
  • Airush Lithium kite

More details on these and other gear later. We will get all the new 2010 gear online as soon as possible. Right now we are moving fast to get all our snowboard gear out for you.

Later,

Dave

Previous Post - September 17, 2009

Hey boarders,

This a fun week for us since we get our 1st look at all the new 2010 gear. All the big brands are here in Hood River letting us see, touch and test next years gear. I will try to keep you updated as we go. Each day four of us test 2 products at a time, then switch, compare notes and share the feedback. This makes our store more knowledgeable than others, plus it's a ton of fun!

So far today we saw the 2010 Severne sails and met with Ben Severne himself. He takes great pride in making the lightest sails on the market but ones that are not all monofilm and are built to last. They look great, but it wasn't windy enough to test the wave sails.

We did see and test the 2010 Airush kites and boards. We know the Vapor-4 is going be our personal favorite for advanced riders but the new Varial and Lithium kites are great for beginner to intermediate and surf riding we tested them a lot. Airush also has an amazing new bar that is easily telescopic and is super safe. All us us hit the quick release while riding so we know exactly how it works.

Hoodriver Kite and Windsurf Expo

Here's some other great new items for 2010 we saw today:

  • Pic1) Ocean Rodeo King 165cm (orange board)
  • Pic2) Airush Sector kiteboard 60cm. Wide !
  • Pic3) Ocean Rodeo 135 and 165cm Makos. Chop eaters.
  • Pic4) Dakine Warlock footstrap. On water adjustabilty.
  • Pic5) Dakine Kicker kite bag: the bag the pros use.

Picture 1 shows two 2010 Ocean Rodeo boards, look at the Orange one, it's a 165cm twin tip called the King. This board also has the ability to be run as a directional, really cool and we've already got orders for two. Here is our customers Pete Wrights report ( we let him have a sneak test ride).

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the special demo of the King! I love the board, doesn't feel as big as it is. Carves nice turns and goes upwind great! Surprisingly it goes up wind good on both tacks with the offset strap setup. I was on the new 2010 9 meter (love the color) with it in 14-20 mph winds and it is a light wind machine! The 9m does feel like it had more low end (maybe like my 10?). A little hard to tell how much the board was contributing to that. A couple people commented when I came in about being on a 9 and doing so well. The fins are maybe not the best setup and the straps could be more duckfooted for me. Small complaints as the overall package is GREAT! I called but you were on the phone. Call me if you want some more detailed feedback. Now I HAVE to have the NEW STUFF! I saw the new Slingshot bar yesterday, what a nice setup!!

Thanks again,

Pete

That's it for now. I will report on more new gear to you as the week progresses.

Dave

In other news the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Since the Saturday of the Labor day weekend the wind has been weird plus we had lots of rain. The good news is it still blew out east nearer the desert for the holiday weekenders and also good is the rain was snow at higher elevations. According to Temira we should get some regular Gorge winds next week.

Also of note is that the windsurfing and kiteboarding manufacturers are having dealer meetings here in Hood River Sept. 16-19th. There will be 40+ stores and manufacturers here to preview and test ride 2010 gear so that we can make the right buying decisions for our customers. Note there is no consumer participation in this event, sorry. If you are in Hood River during this time though you may notice the bars and restaurants are a little more boisterous than normal, this is normal for this crowd. We finally get to take a breather and let off a little steam.

Hope to see you on the water. Please see our clear outs on the home page there are some great deals to be had.

Thanks,

Hey boarders,

We have been busy product testing the early 2010 windsurfing and kiteboarding gear that is beginning to show up. So far for kites we have tested the Slingshot Octane (REV replacement), the Airush Vapor-4 & Varial, all with good results. Brad ran the new raceboard from Airush called the Monaro in the Blowout and calls it "a ripper" and says "it cuts through chop both up and downwind like a windsurf board".

I test rode the 2010 Angulo Chango 73GT Sunday and the Hatch on a 4.0m2 and loved it. It's looser than last years model due to a wingered swallow tail and gybes like a hot knife thru butter. Sweeeet.

I'm back from 10 days vacation at my cottage in Canada. It was great, lots of friends & family, water-skiing, swimming, & long dinners on the screened-in-porch. Thanks to my staff for covering for me while I was away.

The 2010 Angulos sailboards are here. All new designs and some great graphics. The Chango will again be the most popular but now features a new-school shape with a wingered swallow-tail and all new rocker.

Here is ripping staffer Deb Devaris checking it out with Geoff, one of our customers. Second picture shows me and the CGN-7 crew. Come try one out today, we will have a few in the demo program immediately.

No wind until Wednesday or Thursday this week but the weekend is looking good.

Check out CGN-7, the local Gorge TV station. They came in and did a segment with Windance & Kite the Gorge on How-To-Kiteboard. Watch it below:

Also last weeks issue of Rediviva magazine is worth a read. They did a great article on Windsurfing in the Gorge in the 80's. Very funny, lots of crazy parties back in those days.

I am expecting we will be showing end-of season sale prices soon, so clear off your credit cards and get ready to spend!. More news on this soon.

Thanks,

Dave Nunn

Hey boarders,

I guess it's a good thing when I am toooo busy too blog. That's the case this week, we have a lot of people renting gear from us and the rack is empty, plus it's windy again, Yee-Haa. We also have a lot of customers taking lessons, it's perfect weather for it.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the wind on our web-cam page, it's becoming quite popular.

Here's a great quote from one of our windsurfing customers that I can't help but post, it's nice to hear when people like the gear we sell;

"The 8.5m2 Ezzy FreeRide rig you sold me is incredible. I took it out in 10-20 knots yesterday on the Chesapeake, and it was powerful, fast and very easy to control. It was also very easy to rig. It was the most fun I’d had windsurfing in a long time. I’m wishing I had gotten it earlier. Thanks for the great product." -Joe Beck

I am away to my cottage in Canada for a week starting Friday the 9th, it's my daughter Jesse's 10th birthday and they are there on summer vacation. The picture above is from 2 postcards from 1933 which were sold at a local lodge. The place still pretty much looks the same, old but nice and quiet. No wind though :o(

While I am away, don't afraid to ask Ginger, John or Brad for anything special you need. They are my management team and sometimes do better deals than I do!

See you soon,

Dave

Hey boarders,

It's a lousy week here in Hood river. Temperatures are 100+ and the wind has shut down. Blahhhhh. The good news is last weeks nuclear wind is still fresh in everyone's mind.

The Gorge Kite Blowout was a bust last weekend, no wind. They are going to try to re-schedule it for this weekend coming. If you haven't heard of it you should check it out. It's a 17 mile down wind race finishing here in Hood River. Windance staffer Bad Brad Gordon is likely to finish in the top of the fleet. Last year he got 3rd, and 1st on a kiteboard. The other two were on water-skis!

Here is 12 year old Luke Letwin rippin' it up on some recently purchased Windance gear.

I had a nice lunch at Dawn Patrol with 2 of the finest kites schools going. My friends Marco & Heather from Extreme Control kite school in Tulum Mexico were in town and I introduced them to Carlos & Spring of Kite the Gorge here in Hood River.

That's all for now except to note two new deals;

Chinook Carbon booms, both refurbs and demos at $399 (not available online, call for details)

Airush Vapor kites complete $699.

Would someone please bring the wind back?

Dave
