Lines
The sail puts a tremendous load on your
harness lines, and this load is transferred through the harness
hook. Early harnesses just had a hook mounted on a small
plate. Using these types of hooks squeezed
the chest, which led to the idea of welding the hook onto a wider
plate, creating the spreader bar. These help disperse
the load: the longer the bar, the less the chest (or the hips with
seat harnesses) are squeezed. Too long of a bar, and then it
starts to interfere with the buckles on the harness.
Nowadays, spreader bars are available in a variety of
sizes. There is also a spreader bar with a pulley instead of
a hook (the Reactor bar) which enables the harness line to roll
smoothly along it. This makes your sail very easy to move
while sailing hooked in, and also keeps your harness lines from
wearing out.
