Race sails are slowly fading from the quivers of recreational
sailors. Over the past years, the stability, range and handling of
large Freeride
sails has made them a much better choice for most sailors. You
buy other equipment for the conditions you sail in and the way you
sail, so why not sails? Race sails are great if you are sailing at
extreme angles to the wind, and really, really powered up. If that
isn't you, go for the Freeride sails. They have better low end,
very good stability, are much lighter, easier to rig and far less
expensive. They usually have a narrower luff sleeve too, so water starting
is easier and the sail rotates with less effort.
Ezzy sails has reduced their sail line from 4 or 5 models in years
past to only 2. The Infinity has 2 removable cams and is available
in 5.3 to 10.5m sizes. The larger ones are designed more for power
and speed, and the smallest are designed with a bit more handling
in mind. David Ezzy (the designer) feels that the Infinity covers
the needs for sailors in the lighter wind ranges, without the need
for a specific race sail.
Frequently asked Questions
What size mast and boom should I get?
You should get a mast and boom that fit the
sail that you are buying, according to the specifications listed
by the manufacturer (as in the chart above). However you
should also get a boom with enough range to fit other sails that
you already have, or ones that you are planning to get in the
future. Same goes for the mast, get one that is a size that
will work for your sails (manufacturers will generally
list appropriate mast sizes and bend curve specifications for
their sails). If you are looking for race sails, odds are you will
want a carbon
boom due to the size of the sail. Aluminum booms may not
be stiff enough for larger sails.
