No-Tool Rigging

If you use a lever or crank device for downhauling, the following won't work for you. This only applies if you do it back-buster style. Most of us have already tried a version of this, but abandoned it because the "tool" would spin inside your hand. But all that is needed is a variation of the technique. The one below eliminates the need for hand cleats that always seem to disappear at the worst moments, and can be performed on a variety of things that lie around the rigging area: spreader bar (shown), Reactor Bar, boom, mast foot, stick, rock, etc...
NOTE: It doesn't matter if you start the line over or under the rigging bar, but for clarity in this instructional we have started the line under the bar.

Bring the line towards you, under the rigging bar, then up and over the bar, pointing back at the sail foot. Let the end of the line fall limp.
Pass the end of the line under the piece coming from the extension, then across the top of the bar. Let the end of the line fall limp.
Pass the loose end back under the bar, towards the sail.
This is the critical step. Take the loose end and pass it over the line coming from the extension, then back under the bar. Wrap the loose tail once or twice around the bar and downhaul your sail. The two "loops" will tighten against each other as you pull but will not tighten up like a knot.
