Windance's Environmental Policies

Here at Windance we have made great efforts to reduce our impact on the   Earth.  We support organizations that work to protect and enhance our world.  It is a long road, but here are some of the steps we've taken to reduce our impact:
  • Solar Power:  Windance has installed the largest commercial photovoltaic arrays in the Columbia River Gorge.  These panels offset about 20% of our electricity usage in our building.  We have also converted our fluorescent lighting from magnetic ballasts to energy efficient electronic ballasts.  We have also added some natural lighting to reduce our electric lighting needs.  We have also changed our heat sucking garage doors over to modern ones with thermopanes, and insulated panels.  All of these things help us in our goal to reduce our "footprint" on the Earth.

  • Reduce:  We have asked our suppliers to reduce the amount of packaging necessary to sell merchandise.  In addition, we buy high quality products that last longer - this helps to reduce the impact on our resources and our land-fills.

  • Re-use:  In an effort to use fewer resources, we utilize many "used items" to create our displays, fixtures, and cabinets.  We also recycle "used windsurfing gear" back into use so that more people can enjoy this great sport without using more resources.
Finally, Windance has started a Gear-Recycling program that provides "used gear" for FREE to new windsurfers!

  • Recycle:  We have one of the most comprehensive recycling programs in the Gorge.  Not only do we recycle the easy stuff like cardboard, glass, tin, newspaper, and plastic milk cartons; we also recycle a tremendous amount of plastic bags and mixed paper.  Our recycling has reduced our waste stream by at least 50%.

  • Volunteerism: Brian Carlstrom, owner of Windance, was one of the founders of the Columbia Gorge Earth Network/Center, and president for the first few years of this organization.  He was instrumental in organizing  Earth Day events in Hood River from 200 to 2004.

  • Supporting Environmental Organizations:  Windance supports the following local environmental organizations by donating money and time.
