Hi Sailors,

A sure way to kill the wind, even in Baja in January, is to schedule a race. After 9 days of perfect 4.7 and 4.2 wind, the First La Ventana Wind Festival must have angered Mother Nature. The Tecate Beer sponsored Wind Fest was to include a kiting expression session, a windsurfing relay race, and finally a combined kiting/windsurfing downwinder. The wind held just long enough on Saturday to let the women kiters put on a respectable air show, but the men's division was left with a dying breeze and 15 to 20 meter kites. Officials wisely called off the start of the windsurfing relay race which no doubt saved many sailors from a long swim back to the beach. Sunday was a great day for fishing with not enough wind for any events. But the lack of wind didn't seem to stop the celebration party at Pablo's on Sunday evening. With just the right mix of windsurfers, kiters, music, food and refreshments everyone was already looking forward to next year's Wind Fest.

This week's wind is starting out on the light side with only a few kites getting out Monday afternoon, but most people are enjoying a little rest after 9 days of the best wind of the season. This Saturday is the final swap meet of the season, follow by the annual Potato Party Saturday night. The Potato Party is probably the largest group potato bake and potluck in Baja.

Good sailing, Gary
