Baja Update - Jan. 28, 2003

Tuesday is "go to town day" for us...which in La Ventana means a drive over the hill to La Paz. La Paz is the largest City in Baja with a population of over 200,000, and is refreshingly not a tourist town like Cabo. It has the charm and hospitality of real Mexico along with great shopping and even McDonalds. As we crested the hill returning from town last Tuesday, La Ventana Bay was sparkling with flashes of monofilm and Spectra X (Ezzy Sails). We hurriedly unpacked the groceries before hitting the water and were treated to a wonderful day of 4.2 wind and great swells. Everyone was stoked as the week of strong wind continued. But, as with life, good things do end. The last six days have been pretty light on the windsurfing side, with guys on large sails and floaty boards. The winds have been a little weird; coming up strong, but tapering off as the afternoon progresses. The amateur weather forecasters have been blaming everything from the sub-tropical jet to bad karma...but why complain when you're in sunny Baja.

This past Saturday saw the last of the swap meets for the season. The bargain hunters were out searching for the "end of the season" specials and treasures. Many windsurfers and kiters were looking at ways to lighten their load for the return trip north; there was even a Subaru for sale...just the thought of driving "Mex 1" can make a sane person think of buying a plane ticket. The Annual Potato Party was a loud and well attended success, but was marred with controversy centered around who spelled "Potatoe" wrong on all the signs...maybe Dan Quail is in camp.

Good sailing, Gary
