Baja has seen the
winter winds continue to provide an unbelievable stretch of
day-after-day fun on the water. This marks my sixth season
in La Ventana, and it is by far the windiest season I have
experienced here. With only an average of one "no
wind" day per week, wind enthusiasts only complaints
are sore muscles and the occasional blister. And it's been
blowing harder than usual, with many days of 4.2 to 4.7 sail
sizes and kites of 8 to 10 meters.
A new concept for some
people this season is that it's ok to enjoy other Baja
activities even though it may mean missing a day of sailing!
I think it's good to exercise other muscle groups and parts
of the brain. It's shaping up to be a memorable season!
Along with the above average winds this season, is the
above average number of visitors. Maybe the word is out
about the great wind this season, but by the number of
people in the La Ventana campground and adjacent arroyos,
this is definitely "the" place to be this season.
Nancy has taken an "on the water census" the past
two weeks and has come up with counts of 80 to 100 kites and
windsurfers at peak afternoon windy times. That's counting
from Baja Joes, the campground, and Captain Kirks, a total
distance of about half a mile.
The interesting thing is that a friend returning from the
Cabo Airport on one of the windy days counted only 12 people
on the water in Los Barrilles. Fifteen years ago on my first
trip to Baja, Los Barrilles was "the" place to be
for windsurfers and La Ventana was virtually
undiscovered...times have changed.
Sailors have been enjoying the Changos that we brought
down for demo this season. The 85 is receiving rave reviews
from sailors 175 pounds or more for its smooth ride and
turniness. And my personal board, the Chango 75 is still
number one on my list of favorite boards...from 3.7 to 5.2,
it's fun, fast, and carves like no other board I have
ridden. The sun is warm and wind is up...time to go.
Good sailing,
Gary & Nancy
