Baja Update - February 4, 2003

It's scary what no wind will do to some people. After 3 days of suffering with no wind fever, Bud (Hood River, OR) and Ken (Flagstaff, AZ) decided that a change of attire (along with Ken's new RRD Avant Move 259) might appease the wind gods...it worked. Last week we experienced light and weird winds here in La Ventana. Only sailors with bigger sails (6+) were able to get out in the gusty and quick-to-drop winds. A couple days the wind didn't start until 2 pm and dropped so fast that many sailors had to swim or be rescued by friends with boats. But thanks to our friends Bud and Ken, yesterday saw the start of an El Norte pattern with most sailors on 4's and 5's; let's hope it lasts the typical 3 to 5 days. The only down side is that the "boys" won't take their shorts off until the wind stops.

The wind report for January is simple...it blew 24/7. That's 24 days of sailable wind and 7 days of no wind, which is respectable for any sailing site. The RV Park has been full since before Christmas, and new people are still arriving and attempting to squeeze in. The arroyos north of the park seem to be the option for the overflow. I haven't given a fishing report recently, so here's an update. The people who got out during past no wind period were rewarded with limits of Sierra (3 - 5 lbs) and even the occasional Dorado which is rare for this time of the year. A week ago, lucky Larry even caught a 50 lb Wahoo off the south end of the island.

Good sailing, Gary
