Baja Update - February 11, 2003
Last week I thought that Mondays outstanding day of 4.2 might signal the start of a Norte pattern, which usually lasts for 3 to 5 days. So much for thinking I have a handle on the winds of Baja. Tuesday we had a respectable day of 4.7, but unfortunately it went flat for the next four days, including two days of showers. I felt sorry for the recent arrivals who sat on the beach day after day looking sadly to the North. Finally, Sunday afternoon the winds returned for a few hours of 5.5 to 6.5; followed by good wind on Monday.

The positive side of no wind days in Baja is that there is always fun and adventures just beyond the RV park. The mountain bikers headed up the trails and arroyos into the hills that surround La Ventana Bay. The number of dirt bikes in camp has increased significantly this winter and riders have been exploring the back roads and trails to the west and south. A popular ride is the coast road over the mountains to Los Barriles, which is a challenging rocky trail after last years hurricane damage. The coast road south of Los Barriles is a fun dirt and sandy ride along the Sea of Cortez, which goes all the way to Cabo if you have the time and big gas tank.

Good sailing, Gary
