| Baja Update -
February 25, 2003 |
| The subject of today's update is two words:
Weird Weather. Simply put, the winter winds of Baja have
become sporadic during the month of February and sailors who
came down recently have only been averaging two days per
week on the water. The amateur forecasters around camp feel
that southern Baja is seeing the effects of this year's El
Nino, which has brought clouds and even three days of rain
the past weeks.
One windless day we were fishing at the north end of
Cerralvo Island about 20 miles north of La Ventana. We were
enjoying warm sunshine and some great Cabrilla (Sea Bass)
fishing when clouds started to move in quickly from the
south. We brought in our lines and started for camp; by mid
channel we were surrounded by lightning and heavy rain...not
exactly the adventure we were looking for. We made it safely
back to camp to the relief of our nervous neighbors.
Each day more people are leaving camp and heading north,
but the optimists are still hoping for some late season
winds that typically can last into April. Next week I will
send my final report for the season, including how many days
of sailing we had this winter.
Good sailing, Gary
