Baja Update - March 2, 2005
Season Winding Down

it can't last forever, right?

Howdy Friends,
As the season winds down, the camp is thinning out and the water is less crowded....... both good things. We will be heading north in mid-March and be back to our favorite Gorge a week or so later. Enjoy the early spring....... or has it been spring all winter?   Our best to all, G&N

The winter season is winding down here on the beach in La Ventana, which means that folks are beginning to pack up and head north.  But if you like a little more elbow room on and off the water March and April still offer sunshine and some windy days.  February is ending on a windy note with great sailing and kiting for the past 7 days, and it's forecast to hold into at least next week.  Most sailors have been on sail sizes between 5 and 6 meters, with kiters on 10 to 14 meter kites.  Today it's warm and sunny and blowing 4.7 for me...life is good.  Over all the winds have been pretty good this season in spite of a mild El Nino which brought record rains to southern California and northern Baja.  We even had three or four rainy periods in southern Baja which are also rare for winter time.  A rainy period down here is only a day or two long, so I don't expect much sympathy from folks in the northern latitudes.

My friend Denny from San Diego was down a few weeks ago and I am including some pictures he sent me while on a diving trip north of La Paz after sailing for a week here in La Ventana.  If you look close you will see that the whale is covered with a fishing net.  The good news is that after reporting it to local officials, the Mexican Navy sent out a rescue team to free the beautiful creature and send it on its way.  He also got to swim with some friendly seals that enjoyed his company.  These are just two of the adventures that Baja offers besides sailing and kiting all winter.  How about a goat hunting trip to Cerralvo Island with some local friends?  The true joy and spirit of Baja goes well beyond the wind. It's beena fun season and Nancy and I hope you have a enjoyed hearing about the good life here in Baja. We'll be back at Windance Rentals this summer, so stop by and try out some new gear from Ezzy, Angulo, RRD and more....... Happy Sailing,

Gary & Nancy
