Baja Update - October 16, 2003

Waiting for Wind

New campers are arriving as the threat of hurricanes diminishes as we head towards the end of October.  There have been some subtle changes to the weather that signal the end of the tropical summer and the arrival of the north winds that lure us to Baja for the winter.  Fortunately the humidity and temperatures have both dropped the last 2 weeks, which makes it much more comfortable than September.  We’ve even had some north winds (4 days this month so far) which got the kiters and windsurfers with big gear out on the water.

One positive result of the hurricanes this season is that the arroyos are clear and smooth, which makes it easy to explore the canyons and waterfalls in the surrounding hills.  The water has brought the desert to life with green cactus and flowers enhancing the arid landscape.  The latest hot afternoon escape is to take off your shoes and hike up the sandy streams that fill most of the upper arroyos south of La Ventana.  Other no-wind alternatives have been snorkeling and fishing, which has been a little slow so far.

If you are heading down, people arriving recently say the road is good.  Other than a few spots under repair from the storms in southern Baja, it should be clear driving.  There are still some spots on the front row available, and the center portion of the campground is wide open.  The campground has been cleaned and repaired, so things are back to normal.
