Baja Update - November 18, 2004
All set up and waiting for the wind......
The windy season officially starts in November, and as scheduled the season's first El Norte blew into La Ventana on November 1.  The good side of the first Norte is that it brings in cooler and drier air from the desert southwest of the US, which is a welcome change from the hot humid days of the end of summer.  The first days of a Norte tend to be gusty and side off shore which can create a wind shadow for the first two hundred yards off shore...but there were few complaints from the sailors and kiters who have been waiting for the wind.  October was typical early season with only two sailable days (160 lb sailor with a 5.2 and 85 liter board) for the month.  However if you kite or had big boards and sails, you were able to get on the water 12 days.  So far in November we have had 6 days of good sailing plus two more days of lighter wind for kiting.
Life in the campground has picked up since the last week of October.  The last beachfront space was claimed by October 28, and today the second row is full...it is looking like it will be a busy season.  I haven't heard many grumbling about the price increase (60 peso/day) this year, I think everyone knows it was inevitable since it had been $3 to $4 for years.  Progress and development is coming to La Ventana, we all hope that the park can survive.  The old shrimp factory at the south end of the park is being remodeled and looks like it will be operating for the first time in years this season.  There is also a new private RV Park on the beach nearing completion just north of the campground.  It is advertising a restaurant, sports bar, and internet cafe...plus full RV hookups for $10 per night.  The RV sites are on two levels just above the beach.

A final note for the fishing crowd...mucho Dorado.  After last year's disappointing fishing season, the Dorado and Sierra have returned to the bay, and Tuna, Wahoo, and Bonita can be found off the Punta Arenas lighthouse.  Fishing has become a great no wind alternative sport here in the campground.  There are smiles on the faces of the fishers in camp!  Look for the first on the water reviews of the 2005 Ezzys and Angulo Changos.  Good sailing, Gary

Gary and Nancy run the Windance Rental & Demo Center in the summer, and spend the winter on the beach in La Ventana, BCS Mexico.
