November
Comes to a Windy End
|
|
|
|
If
the wind in La Ventana ever makes it to the big board in Las
Vegas, don't ever bet against it. How is it possible
to have only one sailable day the whole month of October and
then 23 sailable days in November? And the wind wasn't
just barely sailable, it was spectacular with most days in
the 4 to 5 meter sail range for everyone on the beach.
Three of the past four days I've been on a 4.2...and the
forth day was 4.7; it just doesn't get any better (Max had
to wear his goggles to keep the sand out of his eyes).
I'm not a meteorologist, but there seems to be a
relationship between the Santa Anna winds that hit southern
California and the Nortes on the Sea of Cortez. A good
example happened last week on Thanksgiving day when Santa
Anna winds of 35 to 50 mph hit the valleys east of Los
Angeles. Some of that wind must have turned south down
the Sea of Cortez because 12 hours later the north winds
arrived in La Ventana with gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

The
camper continue to arrive which means there are 30 to 50
sailors out on the water, as well as, up to 20 kiters.
It seems that the kiters prefer the lighter winds in the
morning and in the late afternoon, while the windsurfers go
for the middle part of the day when the wind blows the
hardest. Even though the two groups share the same
beach and water, at this point of the season, it seems like
everyone is being respectful of each other. Lastly, I
need to mention that the fishing is still lagging over past
years. Many people told me they enjoyed the fishing
pictures from last year's reports...it's not that my camera
is broken, the fishing is. It may be the water
temperature, cycles of nature, or drift nets...but with the
great wind not many are complaining.
Good sailing, Gary
