Incredible
Winds Continue
|
|
The
outstanding winds of November have continued for the first
half of December. Thirteen of the first 17 days of the
month have been a classic Norte pattern here in southern
Baja. The one thing that is different this year is the
number of 4.2 - 4.7 days, which is a meter smaller than
the average sail size, small boards and sails have been the
call half the days to date, today was 3.7! It seems
that when the Santa Anna's blow in Southern California they
give a boost to the winds funneling down the Sea of Cortez.
Everyone is getting as much time on the water as they can
take, the only complaints that I have heard are of sore
muscles and callused hands...life is good.

The
campground is getting cozy as more windseekers are arriving
for the Christmas season. There is still space, but my
guess would be that the camp will be pretty full by the
first of the new year. There are three new restaurants
this season in area which is good news for the cooking
challenged, or when you don't feel like slaving in the
kitchen after a hard day on the water. North of camp
towards El Sargento is a French restaurant featuring
breakfast, lunch, and dinner entries along with the best
bread and pastries in the area. Last week a Chinese
restaurant from La Paz opened a "seasonal branch"
in La Ventana featuring traditional Chinese fare. And
just this morning a new establishment opened for business
just 100 feet outside the park gate...looks like they will
be serving traditional Baja dishes.

A
final note on a water activity enjoyed by many here on the
beach...fishing. As noted in my previous reports this
season, the fishing has been slow, if not, dead. But
the first weekend of December the drought came to an abrupt
end! The Wahoo arrived off the south end of Cerralvo
Island. It seems that they spend a couple of weeks in
the area the first part of December. It may be part of
their yearly migration, but what ever the reason they are a
prized and rare catch...just talk to a lucky fisher who has
boated one of these "gear busters". Four
lucky (skilled) campers caught fish from 31 to a whopping 55
pounds, and shared their prizes with most of the camp.
Now if the wind would stop so we can get out and fish!
Happy Holidays to all, good sailing, Gary
