Baja Update - January 6, 2005
New Year in  Baja

Holiday winds were lackluster, but the days were sunny and warm for all.

Happy New Year to everyone, may the new year bring great winds and fair skies.  Most of us have planned a windsurfing trip with excited anticipation of windy days on the water, only to be disappointed with no wind.  The wind spirits played a cruel trick on the Holiday crowd in Baja this year.  After an unbelievable stretch of great wind the first 3 weeks of December, there were only two windy days in the last 10.  My heart goes out to sailors who were only able to be here for the Holidays.  At least the weather was warm and sunny, and those with a sense of adventure were treated to the best mountain biking, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and exploring southern Baja offers...in many respects the wind is just a bonus.

The Windance crew has been well represented recently here on the beach.  Manager, Chris Boston, and past long time crew member, Holly, made their first visit to Baja over the Holidays.  Fortunately they stopped by the demo center here on the beach on one of the windy days, and took the new Angulo Chango's and 2005 Ezzy's out for a spin.  They came in with big smiles and praise for the equipment...they both thought the Angulo's were definitely "smooth turning machines".  Maybe they don't have the top end speed of the Wave Ones, but when you are playing in the waves and swells, speed isn't necessarily the key to pegging the fun meter.  One thing I did notice about Chris is that he learned that real Mexican food is much better than Taco Bell...his favorite local restaurant is Rafa's which is located just north of the campground, and the Super Burro de Pollo is his favorite dish.

Another Windance crew member who is here this week is Jake Miller.  He is sponsored by Ezzy, Angulo, and Da Kine, and will be running daily clinics on fun transitions and air time.  I had a chance to sail with him this afternoon and I can say that he showed me some moves that I am definitely too old to try...every time I looked over at him, he was in the air, upside down, or sailing backwards...always with a smile on his face.

Oh did I say that the wind returned today.  The first windy day of 2005 was full-on 4.2.  We are all hopeful that the predictions of a mild El Nino weather pattern setting up is wrong.  El Nino is usually bad news for winter Baja winds, since the low pressure systems that hit southern California cut off the normal northerly flow of high pressure that fuel our north winds...stay tuned.

Good sailing, Gary & Nancy
