Great
Winds Continue Into New Year
|
|
This
season in Baja is shaping up as one of the windiest seasons
in memory, with day after day of 4.2 to 4.7 sail sizes.
The count for December was 22 days of sailable winds, with a
couple more days that were "kiteable". There
were even 3 days that I was out on a 3.7, which for Baja is
rare. The strongest El Norte of the season hit on the
27th with 3.7 days and 3.0 nights, which made sailing and
sleeping a challenge. The down side of the strong El
Norte winds is that the first day or two are gusty and
slightly side off shore in direction. The good wind
will be 1/2 mile off shore, which means you slog with a
small sail and board to the wind line, and be alert for
an early shut down to avoid a long swim home. The
gusty conditions have also taken a toll on some kiters who
hopefully have learned that kiting in extremely gusty
conditions can earn you a trip to the hospital in La Paz.
My observation: "There are bold kiters and there
are old kiters, but there are no old, bold kiters."

(even
Max needs a break from all that wind and sunshine
sometimes!)

The
Holidays brought the camp to near capacity with campers
squeezing into every available spot. Most everyone
celebrated Christmas Eve on the beach with pot lucks, a piñata
party for the kids (hosted by Santa and his elves), and
Christmas carols around the campfire. The day after
Christmas we were treated to a warm and sunny day with
only a light breeze. And for those who received
fishing gear for Christmas, a school of big Jack Crevalle
swam by to add some excitement to a relaxing day.
Crevalle are hard fighting fish that cruise the shore line
looking for small bait fish. They surround the small
fish in shallow water and chase them toward shore.
There provided 60 minutes of excitement to anyone with a rod
and lure to cast from shore.

We
have been watching the weather reports from the Northwest
this week and hope that everyone is keeping warm and driving
safe with all the snow and ice storms. Baja has been
keeping us comfortable with sunny skies and 75 to 80 degree
days...does that help?
Good
sailing, Gary
