Baja Update - January 20, 2004

My heart goes out to anyone who came to Baja this past week for some winter sunshine and windsurfing...it didn't happen.  We had two days of unseasonable rain, plus two more days of clouds.  I don't expect much sympathy from those who endure the real winter of the northern latitudes, but believe it or not it rarely rains here in January, especially in amounts measured in inches.  The weird weather has also interrupted the spectacular wind pattern that we have seen since the first of November.  My finger of blame is pointing at the folks who scheduled windsurfing races and a kiting expression session this past weekend...it seems that past history will support my theory that scheduling an event will kill the wind.  The wind report so far for January is 8 days of sailable wind plus 4 days of lighter wind for kiting or big sails ( 6.5 to 7.5) and boards.  Hopefully the wind will return as soon as they pull the racing buoys.

The campground has been pretty lively with great activities like the annual Potato Roast Potluck and volleyball tournament.  After experiencing the first ever postponement (rain!) the Potato Roast was well attended and lasted way past Baja midnight (9pm)...due to combination of stored up energy from not sailing and cervesa.  The village of La Ventana hosted the governor of BCS last week who announced a project to build a new dock and parking area for fishing at the south end of the park.  The project has drawn mixed reactions from locals and campers who currently call South Park home.  The one unknown is when and if the project will ever be started, much less completed...stay tuned.

Best wishes for a warming trend for all our friends in the Gorge who have been hit by snow and ice storms these past weeks.  Good Sailing, Gary
