Baja Update - January 21, 2005
The Return of El Norte!

After light Holiday winds, El Norte has returned in force.

Here is the latest news from the beach in La Ventana.  Hope the snow has arrived and you are cutting some tracks for us.  G&N

It's a lazy windless and cloudy day on the beach, but I don't hear anyone complaining about the lack of wind this afternoon...why no complaints?  Because it's been blowing for 14 of the past 15 days; most days have been serious 4.2 and 4.7 making it the best stretch of sailing this winter.  After the Holiday doldrums which ended on January 5, it's been classic winter time Baja with warm sunny weather and day after day of north winds.  I guess the rumors of El Nino killing the wind for Baja may have been premature.  And since news tends to trickle down the Baja peninsula from the outside world, a good rumor around the campground can become fact quite easily.  For most of us, being cut off from the fast paced high tech world is one of the joys of Baja...at times we just create our own news.
We were treated to a whale of a show the past couple of weeks, as a number of Grey Whales were spotted in La Ventana Bay.  The whales migrate each year to the bays and lagoons along the west coast of the Baja peninsula to give birth, but occasionally a few whales make their way around the southern tip of Baja and find there way north into the Sea of Cortez.  Scammons Lagoon is one the well know areas on the west coast near Guerrero Negro.  Two years ago we stopped there on the trip home in early March and spent a day on the water with a local guide (required) watching numerous calves and their mothers swimming around our boat.  It was a natural wonder in a pristine wilderness area...a must do if you come to Baja.
Hopefully the clouds are just a one day passing front and the winds will return tomorrow, we'll keep you posted, good sailing Gary & Nancy
