Amenities: Paved
parking, porta potties and an easy gravel launch into the
bests port tack ramps in the area. |
| Sailing
conditions: |
Port tack jumping
heaven. 3.5-5.5 most days. Sailable on any tide except max
flood conditions, but the inside is shallow so xlarge fins
can be a problem. Winds are strongest on a northwesterly
push, and when the marine layer is thick over the city.
Small chop on the inside, but huge steep ramps 1/2 mile
offshore in the shipping channel. Lots of room for sailors,
and the closest launch to Silicone Valley. |
 |
| Rigging
area: |
Gravel area between
the launch and the parking area. Plenty of room for
everyone, just watch for golf balls. |
 |
| Launch: |
Gravel pathways to
the water. At mid to low tides, sailors must wade out across
the mud flats to deep water. There are submerged boulders
strewn about the flat also. |
 |
| Parking/Camping: |
Paved parking lot can
get full on weekends and holidays. |

Safety Tips
Site specific: The greatest hazard at
Third Avenue is from golf balls coming over the netting to
the west of the parking area. There has been a continuous
effort by local windsurfing groups and the driving range to
work out solutions to the problem, but balls do come into
the parking area damaging cars. This is not a good place to
test worn out gear. The channel is a long, long way from
shore, and in the tidal current of the bay.
One should always be aware of the local currents, tides
and underwater obstacles.

Directions
to get there: |
Take the
Foster City Boulevard exit off Hwy. 92 / San Mateo Bridge
heading Northwest, then north as the road bends. Turn left
at the "T", and proceed 300-400 yards. Turn right
before the golf driving range, head north on the gravel road
and park. |
