Bump &
Jump. The chop here is fairly close together. Avery is a
bit of a "secret spot", which often has wind
when other nearby locations don't. It is also rarely
crowded. The western launch usually has a bit more wind
and waves. |

Rigging
area: |
Rigging can
be done in the rocky, gravel parking areas, or on the
rocky "beach". |

| Launch: |
The launch
is quite nice, although somewhat rocky (fist-sized). The
West site launches directly into the wind, making it a bit
difficult to clear the rocky beach (see hazards, below). |

Avery
actually has two sailing areas, one straight in near the
boat ramp, and the other to the West. The westerly site
has an incredible view of Mt. Hood. The sunset here is
one of the nicest in the Gorge. Camp sites are right near
the water. The train is also right nearby, even at night.
There is camping, climbing at nearby Horsethief Butte, and petroglyphs at
Horsethief Lake, just a few miles to the West of Avery (petroglyph
access is available only by guided tour, 10: 00 AM, Friday and
Saturday April through October. Reservations for the guided tours must
be requested in advance through the Park Ranger at (509) 767-1159). |

Tips
Site specific: Barges do pass on the
Washington side of the island, so use that barge signal.
East site:
West site: There is a submerged rock that I always seem
to hit on the way out. If you walk your rig out 30 ft. or
so, you can avoid this problem. |
Directions
to get there: |
From
The Dalles, cross the bridge, go East on Hwy 14 past
Horsethief Lake. When you reach the top of a hill, you
will see a gravel parking lot, and a small
"Avery" sign pointing down a long steep, gravel
road to Avery. Watch for trains! You can go to the East
to a more finished campground, or head towards the West
along a rough road to the westerly camping area. You can
sail from either site. |

and news
about this site: |
The
Avery park is scheduled to be given to the Indians as an in-lieu
fishing site. The CGWA
is working with Army Corps of Engineers and the tribes to maintain some
windsurfing access.
