K-Wing / Downwind / Freefly
2026 F-One PLUME K-Wing
A featherlight hybrid of a kite and wing created for effortless freefly, wave riding and downwind foiling.
The F-One PLUME introduces a different way to ride wind-powered foils. Instead of using a conventional center strut with separate handles or a boom, this K-Wing combines a small inflatable leading edge, compact C-shaped canopy, minimal bridle and 41cm vertical control bar.
Removing the center strut keeps the PLUME exceptionally light and compact while freeflying. It drifts smoothly in front of the rider, provides excellent visibility and generates gentle forward traction without placing excessive strain on the arms. When it is time to return upwind, its efficient profile delivers an angle comparable to a conventional hand wing.

What Is a K-Wing?
A K-Wing blends characteristics of a kite, conventional wing and pocket wing. Like a wing, the PLUME is held directly at arm’s length and provides substantial depower without using long kite lines. Like a kite, its bridled C-shaped canopy produces smooth forward pull and exceptional glide.
The result is a compact, stable power source that can be controlled through small movements of the vertical bar. It normally flies with very light bar pressure and can often be controlled one-handed, although two hands may be useful when riding powered or pointing upwind.
Why Choose This Wing?
Exceptional Freefly Performance
Choose the PLUME if you want the wing to virtually disappear while connecting bumps or surfing swell. Its low weight, compact profile and stable drift reduce the bulk and wingtip interference associated with a traditional hand wing.
Smooth Downwind Glide
The PLUME provides gentle forward traction and glides smoothly in front of the rider. Quick transitions between powered riding and freefly make it especially effective for shorter swell rides where the sail must be released and recovered frequently.
Strong Upwind Ability
Unlike a small pocket wing intended primarily for downwind use, the PLUME can point upwind at an angle comparable to a conventional wing. This allows riders to climb back to the top of a swell run without arranging a shuttle.
Wide, Comfortable High End
The bridled canopy offers effective depower and remains light and stable through gusts. F-One gives most sizes approximately 15 to 20 knots of usable manufacturer range.
Best Riding Styles
| Riding Style | Suitability | How the PLUME Performs |
|---|---|---|
| Downwind / Freefly | Exceptional | Its primary discipline. Extremely light, compact and stable while drifting in front of the rider. |
| Wave Riding | Excellent | Quickly transitions between powered upwind riding and freefly without a bulky center strut blocking movement or visibility. |
| Freeride | Very Good | Smooth forward pull, light bar pressure and strong upwind ability also make it enjoyable for flat-water cruising. |
| Beginner Progression | Good with the Right Setup | Control is intuitive, but low-end takeoff is more technical than with a conventional wing. A gliding midlength board and adequate wind are recommended. |
| Light Wind | Moderate / Technical | The 6.0m reaches 12 knots for a 75kg reference rider, but a conventional wing pumps more efficiently and offers easier low-end takeoff. |
| Speed / Racing | Recreational | Efficient upwind with good forward traction, but it is designed around glide and freefly rather than maximum race speed. |
| Freestyle / Jumping | Limited | The PLUME is not intended as a jumping or freestyle wing. Choose the F-One STRIKE for pop, speed and aerial performance. |

F-One’s published wind ranges are guidelines for a 75kg rider. Rider weight, foil size, board glide, water conditions and experience will affect the usable range.
Pound measurements are approximate conversions from F-One’s published kilogram weights. The manufacturer lists the weight of the 6.0m as TBC.
Which Size Should You Choose?
2.5–3.0m: Very Strong Wind
Specialized sizes for consistently strong conditions, lighter riders or experienced riders seeking the smallest possible freefly package.
3.5m: Strong Wind
A compact high-wind size with a published 25–40-knot range. It is well suited to powered coastal swell and strong-wind downwind sessions.
4.2m: Core Learning Size
F-One recommends approximately 20–25-knot conditions for initial PLUME sessions. That makes the 4.2m a versatile choice for many riders learning the K-Wing control technique.
5.0–6.0m: Added Low End
Larger sizes for moderate wind and heavier riders. Pair them with a long, narrow midlength or downwind board to compensate for the PLUME’s more technical low-end pumping.
Construction and Riding Feel
No Center Strut
Eliminating the center strut dramatically reduces weight and bulk. The PLUME stays compact overhead, offers excellent visibility and is easier to forget about while freeflying.
Small Inflatable Leading Edge
The reduced leading-edge diameter minimizes drag and swing weight. F-One states that the leading edge can be deflated in the air and reinflated at sea with a compatible mini pump.
Minimal Bridle System
Short, simplified bridles support the canopy and transfer power to the vertical bar. The system provides kite-like glide without the long flying lines used by a conventional kite.
C-Shape Profile
The sleek C-shape balances the wing naturally, improves visibility and provides stable steering response through powered, depowered and freefly positions.
HITEX Airframe Material
F-One’s high-tenacity polyester airframe material is engineered for resistance to elongation and long-term shape retention while handling elevated inflation pressure.
Lightweight Canopy Construction
Lightweight micro-ripstop canopy materials and targeted fabric weights reduce unnecessary mass while preserving stability, durability and aerodynamic shape.
Load-Control Paneling
Panels are aligned with the primary load paths so tension follows the fabric’s warp and weft yarns. This helps reduce unwanted deformation and maintain the intended profile.
Staggered Seams
Staggered trailing-edge seams distribute stiffness and tension across a wider area, helping the canopy retain its shape while avoiding unnecessary reinforcement.
PLUME Materials: Standard or Premium?
The PLUME does not use Aluula. Its extremely low weight comes primarily from its minimalist architecture—a small leading edge, no center strut and carefully managed fabric weights—rather than an ultra-premium composite airframe.
| Feature | PLUME Construction | What It Means on the Water |
|---|---|---|
| Inflatable Structure | Small HITEX high-tenacity polyester leading edge with no center strut. | Very low weight, reduced drag and minimal bulk while freeflying. |
| Canopy | Lightweight micro-ripstop construction with load-oriented panel placement. | Stable aerodynamic shape without excessive reinforcement or material weight. |
| Stiffness | Canopy tension is supported by a minimal bridle rather than a rigid center strut. | Smooth power and efficient glide instead of the direct, punchy response of a freestyle wing. |

Vertical Bar and Control System
Every PLUME size uses the same 41cm vertical bar. The bar connects to a short bridle that controls steering, power and depower through small hand movements.
- No separate wing handles: The PLUME does not have front and rear handles mounted on a center strut.
- No conventional boom: Its 41cm vertical bar controls a bridle and works differently from a horizontal wing boom.
- One-handed control: Light bar pressure allows one-handed riding in many situations.
- Powered upwind riding: Two hands may provide more leverage when heavily powered or pointing high upwind.
- Harness optional: A harness may be used, but F-One states it is generally unnecessary because of the light bar pressure.
- Freefly transition: Grab the front freefly handle to let the PLUME drift while riding swell.
Board and Foil Recommendations
Best Board Type
F-One recommends a long, narrow midlength or SUP downwind board with efficient glide. A Crossover or prone board can also work when matched to the rider’s ability and conditions.
Best Foil for Learning
A larger, efficient foil makes the first sessions easier. F-One specifically recommends the SEVEN SEAS 1300 or 1500, or a SK8 larger than 1000cm², when learning K-Wing takeoffs.
