K-Wing / Downwind / Freefly

2025 F-One Plume K-Wing

An exceptionally light kite-and-wing hybrid created for effortless freefly, intuitive downwind foiling and comfortable upwind returns.

The 2025 F-One PLUME introduces K-Winging—a new approach to foiling that combines the glide of a kite with the simple, arm’s-length control of a handheld wing. Its small inflatable leading edge, strutless construction, minimal bridle and stable C-shaped profile create an exceptionally light freefly tool that remains easy to control through gusts, transitions and downwind runs. The PLUME is designed for riders who want more freedom and visibility than a conventional wing without the packing and handling complexity of a pocket wing.

  • Downwind & Freefly
  • Strutless Inflatable Design
  • 41cm Vertical Bar Included
  • Excellent High-Wind Control
  • Beginner-Friendly K-Wing
  • Sizes 2.5–6.0m

What Is a K-Wing?

A K-Wing sits between a conventional wing foil wing and a pocket wing. Like a kite, the PLUME uses a short bridle and vertical control bar to produce smooth forward traction. Like a handheld wing, it remains close to the rider, offers excellent depower and does not require long kite lines or a harness.

Important: The PLUME is not a conventional wing with handles or a boom. It uses an included 41cm vertical bar connected to a minimal bridle system.

Why Choose the F-One Plume?

Exceptional Freefly

With no central strut and a very small leading edge, the PLUME feels almost weightless when depowered. It glides smoothly in front of the rider without becoming bulky or obstructing movement.

Easy, Intuitive Steering

Small movements of the vertical bar adjust power and direction. The control feels similar to a joystick, and most riding can be done with one hand once the rider is comfortably on foil.

Smooth Forward Traction

Instead of loading the rider’s arms with heavy sideways pull, the PLUME produces gentle forward drive. A harness can be used, but F-ONE states that it is generally unnecessary.

Wide Wind Range

Each PLUME size covers a broad range and remains controlled through gusts. F-ONE describes the 4.2m as comfortable from approximately 20–35 knots.

Windance recommendation: Choose the PLUME if you want the easiest entry into K-Winging, outstanding freefly stability and fast transitions between powered upwind riding and downwind foil surfing.

Who Is the Plume Best For?

Riding Style Suitability How It Performs
Freefly Exceptional The PLUME’s primary strength. Its low weight, small leading edge and strutless design let it glide with minimal rider input.
Downwind Foiling Excellent Quickly transitions from powered riding to freefly, allowing the rider to focus on connecting bumps and surfing swell.
Wave Riding Excellent Stable drift, high visibility and rapid catch-and-release control make it especially effective for short waves and repeated transitions.
Freeride Very Good The PLUME can comfortably ride back and forth, go upwind and jibe on flat water even when downwinding is not the objective.
Beginner K-Wing Progression Excellent Stable, intuitive and easier to manage than a pocket wing. F-ONE recommends 20–25 knots for initial learning sessions.
Light Wind Technical The 6.0m reaches down to 12 knots, but a conventional wing has stronger low-end pumping and can take off with a smaller board.
Freestyle / Jumping Not Recommended The PLUME is designed for freefly, downwind and freeride rather than jumping, rotations or wing freestyle.
Racing / Maximum Speed Not Its Main Focus It offers efficient upwind riding and smooth glide, but prioritizes control and freedom over maximum speed.

Construction and Performance

Strutless Construction

Eliminating the central strut significantly reduces weight and bulk. The PLUME feels less cumbersome than a conventional wing when depowered, freeflying or following swell.

Small Inflatable Leading Edge

The compact leading edge provides structure and reassuring flotation without the weight and drag of a full wing airframe. It can also be deflated in the air and reinflated at sea with a mini pump.

Delta C-Shape Profile

The C-shaped profile improves stability, steering response and depower. Its open field of view helps the rider remain connected to the water, swell and surrounding traffic.

Minimal Bridle System

Fewer bridle lines simplify setup and reduce potential tangles compared with a conventional pocket wing. The short system also keeps the PLUME close and easy to control.

HITEX Leading Edge

F-ONE’s HITEX high-tenacity polyester is engineered for resistance to elongation and long-term shape stability. It provides the PLUME’s inflatable structure without using Aluula.

Lightweight Canopy

Lightweight micro-ripstop canopy construction helps reduce inertia while maintaining rigidity, tear resistance and reliable performance in wet, salty and sandy environments.

Exceptional Depower

Small bar movements let the rider reduce power quickly without losing stability. This makes the PLUME comfortable when gusts arrive and easy to transition into a neutral freefly position.

Comparable Upwind Angle

F-ONE states that the PLUME’s upwind angle is comparable to a conventional wing, allowing riders to gain ground before turning downwind to surf swell.

Material clarification: The PLUME does not use Aluula, a full Dacron wing frame or a central strut. Its lightweight construction combines a small HITEX inflatable leading edge with a strutless canopy and minimal bridle.

Vertical Bar vs. Wing Handles or Boom

Control System How It Works Riding Feel
PLUME Vertical Bar A 41cm vertical bar controls steering, power and depower through a short bridle. Light, precise and frequently manageable with one hand.
Conventional Wing Handles Separate handles connect directly to a central inflatable strut. Direct pumping power but requires hand changes between fixed positions.
Conventional Wing Boom A long horizontal boom allows free hand placement along the strut. Excellent control and pumping, but with more airframe weight and bulk during freefly.

The PLUME’s vertical bar is included. No separate handles, boom or kite control bar is required.

Plume vs. Frigate vs. Strike V5

F-One Model Design Best For Why Choose It?
PLUME Strutless inflatable K-Wing with vertical bar Accessible freefly, waves, downwind and freeride Choose it for ease of use, excellent depower, a wide wind range and fast transitions between powered riding and freefly.
FRIGATE Packable single-skin pocket wing Long downwinders, compact stashing and experienced riders Choose it for stronger low-end power, faster upwind riding and the ability to pack the wing away during a long downwind run.
STRIKE V5 Conventional inflatable wing with center strut Freeride, pumping, freestyle and everyday wing foiling Choose it for stronger pumping efficiency, easier low-wind takeoff, smaller-board compatibility, speed and freestyle performance.
Choose the PLUME instead of the FRIGATE if you want simpler setup, better high-end control and a more beginner-friendly freefly experience. Choose the PLUME instead of the STRIKE when downwind freedom, low weight and unobstructed visibility matter more than pumping power or freestyle.

Available Sizes and Official Wind Ranges

Available Size Manufacturer Wind Range PLUME Weight Vertical Bar
3.0m 30+ knots 0.73 kg 41 cm
3.5m 25–40 knots 0.86 kg 41 cm
4.2m 20–35 knots 0.99 kg 41 cm
5.0m 15–30 knots 1.11 kg 41 cm
F-ONE’s wind ranges are guidelines for a 75 kg rider. Board glide, foil area, rider skill and water conditions significantly affect K-Wing takeoff and the ideal PLUME size.

Recommended Board and Foil Setup

Board Recommendation

A long, narrow midlength or SUP downwind board provides the glide needed for takeoff. A Crossover or prone foil board can also work when conditions and rider skill allow.

Foil Recommendation

For initial sessions, F-ONE recommends a larger, accessible foil such as a SEVEN SEAS 1300 or 1500, or an SK8 larger than 1000cm².

The PLUME cannot be pumped as efficiently as a conventional wing. A board with strong passive glide is particularly important near the bottom of the wind range.
