Why You’ll Love the North Sonar SF
Stay Flying at Lower Speeds
The SF’s evolved foil section generates strong lift at the lower end of its speed range. This gives you more time in the pocket and helps the foil continue flying when wave or wake energy fades.
Pump Back into the Ride
The profile is forgiving of sudden angle-of-attack changes. When the foil approaches a stall, a well-timed pump can quickly rebuild speed and help connect another wave or wake.
Carve with Confidence
Reduced area toward the tips lowers the force required to roll the foil. The result is responsive rail-to-rail control without sacrificing the stability needed for pumping and takeoff.
Ride a Smaller Wing
Because the SF produces substantial low-speed lift for its area, experienced riders may be able to choose a smaller, more responsive wing than expected while retaining useful pumping performance.
Designed for Surf-Focused Foiling
Prone Surf Foiling
Low-speed lift gives riders more time to paddle, catch the wave and establish stable flight. Once flying, the SF delivers the roll control and tight banking response needed for surf-style lines.
Wing Surfing and Parawing
The SF lifts efficiently without requiring excessive board speed. Riders can choose a smaller, more maneuverable front wing for carving swell while retaining a forgiving lower speed range.
Wake and Assisted Foiling
Efficient pumping and strong low-speed energy transfer help riders connect boat wakes, ride farther back or use assisted power to access waves before switching attention to the surf.
Pump and Downwind Practice
The SF favors a manageable pumping cadence, composed glide and easy recovery. It is a versatile choice for riders developing pump technique or working toward open-water downwind skills.
Key Features
Low-Speed Foil Section
Additional profile thickness and curvature in the forward section help generate lift at lower speeds while making the wing less sensitive to aggressive or imperfect pumping inputs.
Efficient Area Distribution
Area is distributed across the span to balance pump stability with responsive turning. Reduced tip area lowers the rolling moment, allowing the foil to bank with less rider effort.
Moderate Anhedral
The front-view curve provides useful roll stability for takeoffs and pumping while retaining enough freedom to initiate smooth rail-to-rail carves.
Gently Swept Outline
The swept planform supports controlled yaw response and intuitive turning, helping the foil move from smooth drawn-out carves into tighter surf-style redirects.
Composed Low-Speed Glide
North developed the SF to deliver an efficient gliding sensation at a lower speed than its dedicated HA Series. This helps riders stay with slower waves instead of outrunning them.
Responsive Fuselage Position
The front wing sits farther back on the fuselage than some other North wings. This reduces yaw stability slightly and makes it easier to initiate a turn.
Pre-Preg Carbon Construction
The carbon laminate provides the stiffness and direct feedback required for efficient pumping, controlled loading through turns and predictable response across the speed range.
Six Size-Specific Designs
Each size has its own span and aspect ratio. Smaller sizes become progressively more performance-oriented, while larger sizes prioritize lift, low-speed support and accessible pumping.
Performance Feel
Takeoff
Lift builds early and predictably, helping the rider rise onto foil without the high entry speed associated with thinner, speed-focused front wings.
Pumping
The SF accepts both deliberate full-body pumps and smaller corrective inputs. Its forgiving recovery helps maintain flight when timing or pitch is not perfect.
Carving
The foil rolls smoothly from side to side and responds quickly to rider input. Refined tips support powerful banking turns without making the foil feel excessively locked in.
Glide
Glide is calm and controlled rather than dependent on maximum speed. This makes it easier to stay in the wave’s usable energy and prepare for the next turn or pump.

Recommended Stabilizer Pairing
SF530 and SF680 — S185
North recommends the S185 Surf Series Stabilizer for both the SF530 and SF680. Its smaller area complements the speed, roll response and maneuverability of these compact front wings while retaining suitable low-speed support.
SF830 — S185 or S215
The SF830 can be paired with either the S185 or S215. Choose the S185 for a faster, looser and more responsive feel, or the S215 for additional pitch support, front-foot pressure and low-speed stability.
SF930–SF1230 — S215
North’s direct recommendation for the SF930, SF1080 and SF1230 is the S215 Surf Series Stabilizer. It was developed with a low stall speed to complement the larger SF front wings.
Advanced Glide Alternative
North also identifies its Glide /2 stabilizers as compatible performance options for the SF Series. The flatter S142 or S192 can produce a faster, looser and lower-drag ride, but requires more advanced foil control and careful sizing.
Which SF Size Should You Choose?
SF530
The smallest, highest-aspect and most performance-focused SF. Best for advanced riders, powerful surf, assisted foiling and situations where speed, tight turning and minimal front-wing area are priorities.
SF680
Fast, highly maneuverable and surprisingly efficient for its area. A strong option for experienced surf and wing foilers who want compact-wing response with useful pumping ability.
SF830
A versatile performance size that balances low-speed lift, glide and responsive carving. The choice of S185 or S215 allows the setup to be tuned toward looseness or stability.
SF930
A balanced all-around surf size with approachable low-speed performance. It suits prone, wake and wing-surf riders looking for a blend of pumping, glide and maneuverability.
SF1080
Provides additional lift and low-speed support for softer conditions, easier pumping and riders who need more carrying capacity without moving to the largest SF.
SF1230
The largest and most lift-oriented SF. Choose it for maximum low-speed support, smaller waves, lower-energy wakes, pump-focused sessions or riders who need the greatest carrying capacity.
Compatibility and Setup
North Sonar System
The SF Front Wing is designed for the modular North Sonar foil system and must be connected to a compatible North Sonar fuselage, mast and stabilizer. It is not a universal front wing.
Stabilizer Sold Separately
This listing is for the front wing only. The recommended S185 or S215 stabilizer, fuselage, mast and board-mounting components are required to complete the foil and are sold separately unless stated otherwise.
Size-Specific Mounting Screws
SF530, SF680–SF1080 and SF1230 use different screw packs. Do not assume the mounting screws from another North front wing are the correct length.
Mast-Track Position
Because North moved the SF wing farther back on the fuselage to improve turning response, some riders may need to move the mast slightly farther forward in the board track compared with other North front wings.

North Sonar SF FAQ
What does SF mean?
SF identifies North’s Surf Front Wing Series. The range is designed around low-speed lift, efficient pumping and surf-style turning.
Is this a complete foil?
No. This product includes the selected front wing, its cover and the correct mounting-screw pack. A compatible North Sonar stabilizer, fuselage and mast are required.
Which stabilizer does North recommend?
North recommends the S185 for SF530 and SF680, either the S185 or S215 for SF830, and the S215 for SF930, SF1080 and SF1230.
What is the difference between S185 and S215?
The smaller S185 creates a faster, looser and more maneuverable ride. The larger S215 adds stability, low-speed support and front-foot pressure.
Can I use a Glide Series stabilizer?
Yes. North identifies the Glide /2 Series as compatible with SF front wings for advanced riders seeking less drag and a looser feel. The Surf Series recommendation remains the best starting point.
How is the SF different from the MAv2?
The SF is more surf- and pump-focused, with a lower stall speed and more carving freedom. The MAv2 is the more general-purpose choice for progression, pitch stability and all-around freeride use.
How is the SF different from the DW?
The SF prioritizes low-speed lift, pumping and turning. The higher-aspect DW Series prioritizes low drag, long-distance glide and open-water downwind efficiency.
Will I need to change my mast position?
Possibly. North notes that the SF sits farther back on the fuselage for quicker turning response, so you may need to move the mast slightly farther forward in the board track.
Do all SF sizes use the same screws?
No. The SF530 uses M8 × 0.91 in. (23 mm), SF680–SF1080 use M8 × 0.98 in. (25 mm), and SF1230 uses M8 × 1.18 in. (30 mm) mounting screws.
Which SF size should I choose?
Smaller sizes favor speed and maneuverability, while larger sizes provide more lift and low-speed support. Consider rider weight, experience, board, wave energy, power source and how reliably you need the foil to launch.
Why North Sonar SF?
The North Sonar SF Series is built for the part of foiling where connection matters most: staying with the wave, rebuilding speed with a pump and turning without losing flow. Its low-speed foil section, composed glide, responsive outline and six-size range create a versatile platform for prone, wing surf, parawing, wake, pump and assisted foiling.
