Performance Race Wing
2025 North Mode Ultra Wing
A VMG-optimized race wing with a partial double skin, ultra-stiff airframe and included carbon boom for maximum speed and efficiency.
The 2025 North Mode Ultra Wing is engineered for performance-focused wing foilers who want to point higher upwind, reach deeper downwind and maintain control at race pace. Its aerodynamic partial double skin reduces drag, while the N-Weave45 airframe, Carbon UDi reinforcement and lightweight N-Xi canopy create a rigid, highly responsive wing that converts small changes in wind pressure into forward acceleration.

Why Choose the Mode Ultra?
VMG-Optimized Design
The Mode Ultra is designed to sail at efficient upwind and downwind angles, helping racers cover less distance between marks while maintaining speed.
Partial Double Skin
A second canopy layer around the wing’s profile improves aerodynamic efficiency, reduces drag and supports faster upwind and downwind performance.
N-Weave45 Airframe
North’s high-tensile woven airframe material provides biaxial and torsional stiffness for efficient power delivery with reduced deformation under load.
Carbon UDi Reinforcement
Unidirectional carbon tapes reinforce the leading edge and strut, improving snapback and helping the wing maintain its intended shape during pumping and high-speed riding.
Included Carbon Boom
The pre-installed 1100mm GripLock Carbon Boom provides continuous hand placement, direct control and reduced fatigue during long reaches, tacks and gybes.
High-Speed Stability
A thin profile, flatter dihedral and high-aspect outline help the wing feel increasingly locked in as apparent wind and board speed increase.
Wing Sizes and Wind Range
| Wing Size | Wingspan | North Wind Range | Recommended Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.2m | 305cm | 18–36+ knots | Strong wind, powered racing and lighter riders |
| 4.8m | 326cm | 16–32 knots | High-wind racing and powered medium-wind sessions |
| 5.4m | 337cm | 11–26 knots | Broad medium-wind range and versatile race use |
| 6.2m | 345cm | 9–24 knots | Light-to-moderate wind with strong top-end range |
| 6.5m | 350cm | 8–22 knots | Light-wind racing and heavier riders |
| 7.0m | 355cm | 7–20 knots | Maximum low-end power and light-wind efficiency |
Which Size Should You Choose?
Strong-Wind Control
Choose the 4.2m for consistently strong conditions, smaller riders or high-speed racing when control and top-end stability matter more than low-end power.
Powered Performance
The 4.8m suits powered medium-to-strong wind and provides a useful step between dedicated high-wind and general medium-wind sizes.
Broad Medium-Wind Range
The 5.4m offers the broadest middle-of-the-range option for riders who want one Mode Ultra to cover common race and freeride conditions.
Light-to-Medium Wind
Choose the 6.2m when you need earlier foil takeoff but still expect increasing wind or want a large wing with substantial high-end capability.
Light-Wind Power
The 6.5m is suited to light-wind racing, larger riders and locations where additional low-end power is required without stepping up to the largest size.
Maximum Low End
Select the 7.0m for the lightest race conditions, heavier riders or small, efficient race foils that require more power to reach takeoff speed.
Performance Technology
N-Xi Canopy
The ultra-stiff N-Xi canopy material is listed by North as 38% lighter, helping reduce weight while maintaining the tension required for precise race-wing performance.
Profile-Stabilizing Battens
Lightweight battens help the canopy rebound and return to its intended profile quickly after pumping, gusts and changes in apparent wind.
Radiate Panel Layout
Radial canopy panels distribute loads along defined directions, stabilizing the wingtips and creating a cleaner aerodynamic shape.
Dual LiteVision Windows
Strategically positioned windows improve visibility around other riders while minimizing unnecessary material and weight.
Dual HyperFlow Valves
Separate leading-edge and strut valves allow the strut to be inflated independently to its specified pressure while supporting faster inflation and deflation.
Detachable Tow Handle
The compact front handle is shaped to minimize drag and can be removed by riders seeking the cleanest possible race setup.
Mode Ultra vs. Other North Wings
| Wing | Primary Focus | Why Choose It? | Handle System |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Mode Ultra | Maximum VMG and race performance | Partial double skin, reduced drag and the most specialized high-speed design | Pre-installed GripLock Carbon Boom |
| 2025 Mode Pro | High-speed freeride and freestyle | Fast and stiff, but more versatile for jumping and recreational powered riding | ShiftLock handles or boom sold separately |
| 2025 Nova Pro | Performance freeride, carving and freestyle | More neutral handling, better trailering and a more forgiving all-around character | ShiftLock handles or boom sold separately |
GripLock Boom Compatibility
Carbon Boom Included
Every 2025 Mode Ultra size includes a pre-installed 1100mm GripLock Carbon Boom. The boom provides continuous hand movement and does not require the purchase of separate handles.
World Sailing Race Approval
Approved for Formula Wingfoil Racing
The 2025 North Mode Ultra was approved by World Sailing for use in the 2025 IWSA Formula Wingfoil Racing Class, making it a competition-ready choice for riders participating in applicable race events.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the carbon boom included?
Yes. Every listed size includes a pre-installed 1100mm GripLock Carbon Boom.
Is the Mode Ultra suitable for beginners?
It is primarily a performance race wing. Newer riders will generally find an all-around North Nova easier and more forgiving to learn on.
Does it accept ShiftLock handles?
No. The Mode Ultra uses the fixed GripLock Carbon Boom system and is not compatible with ShiftLock handles or booms.
What does partial double skin do?
The additional canopy layer shapes the airflow around part of the wing profile, reducing drag and improving lift, speed, upwind angle and downwind efficiency.
